Zaman

Decoding my musical DNA: a journey through generations of wandering, longing, and hope.

Zaman is an exploration of musical DNA, where tradition and innovation create something entirely new. Moving away from technically-focused jazz, Eden Bareket crafts simple pentatonic and modal melodies layered over the earthy beats of his ancestors. It is a sonic journey across continents and centuries, blending Klezmer, Moroccan, and Middle Eastern scales to honor the risks, dreams, and enduring spirit of those who came before him.

The Story of Zaman

Can you fit a century of wandering into a single song?

Zaman is a musical odyssey that traces generations of family migration across continents. The journey begins in 1894 with a family sailing from Bessarabia to Argentina, and weaves through 1934 as another branch flees Baghdad for Jerusalem across the desert. Decades later, these paths cross in Israel between immigrants from Tangier and Buenos Aires, sparking a cycle of transatlantic migration that continued for generations. Zaman explores the profound emotional weight of these journeys: what it feels like to leave everything behind in search of a safe, peaceful place to simply be yourself.

To translate this ancestral journey into sound, Eden Bareket decoded his musical DNA, blending the traditional music of his grandparents' homelands. The album fuses Moroccan, Middle Eastern, South American, and Klezmer roots into a cohesive, earthy sound. Moving away from the technically complex, cerebral jazz of his past work, Bareket leans into simple pentatonic and modal melodies. Through the deep, resonant voice of the baritone saxophone, each track serves as a "musical snapshot," layering ancient, driving rhythms with melodies of hope, longing, and endurance.

Ultimately, Zaman breathes vibrant color and life into faded black-and-white family photographs. It proves that as people move, music fuses and creates something entirely new.

The album is an invitation to travel through time—to stand on the deck of an 1894 steamship or ride through the 1930s Iraqi desert—allowing listeners to hear centuries of wandering in a single note.

Eden Bareket is a baritone saxophonist and composer whose music serves as a global language, connecting deep ancestral roots with contemporary expression.

By weaving together North African, Middle Eastern, Eastern European, and South American folk rhythms, Eden moves beyond cerebral jazz to create earthy, emotionally resonant compositions.

His latest project, Zaman, is a testament to his musical DNA, a rhythmic and melodic exploration of a century of family migration
